Artspace presents “unofficial work by 30 contemporary artists in, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary and Poland who choose to operate outside the sanctioned state artists’ unions and academies.
According to the exhibition catalogue, “while muy of the photographs ill the exhibition take on the outlines of familiar categories – landscapes; portraiture or documentary – each work is imbued with a sensibility which betrays the unique situation of the artist within these Soviet bloc nationals.
Guest curator for this exhibition is John P. Jacob, an artist living in New York who has been researching and compiling photographs and artists’ documentation from Eastern Europe for over four years. Jacob gathered the material an printed the photographs in the exhibition from negatives sent to him in the mailby artists he Corresponds with in Eastern Europe.
